Begonya De Salvo, an accomplished Spanish to English literary translator, judicial interpreter, writer, and editorial professional, has led a remarkable career defined by her diverse range of skills and contributions. Currently residing in Pasadena, California, Begonya’s journey has taken her across borders and continents, shaping her unique perspective and expertise.
Begonya’s international experience began when she was awarded the prestigious Erasmus grant, which enabled her to live in Heidelberg, Germany from 2002 to 2004. During her time there, she immersed herself in the local culture and pursued her academic passions. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Art History from the University of Valencia, Spain, a Master’s degree in European Art History from Heidelberg University, and a degree in Legal Translation and Interpretation from California State University Los Angeles.
Her exceptional linguistic abilities and legal expertise have earned her a coveted spot on the expert panel list for Los Angeles County. In this role, Begonya has provided her invaluable insights and opinions in numerous criminal cases, serving both the defense and the prosecution. Her contributions have been instrumental in ensuring fairness and justice within the legal system.
Currently, Begonya holds the position of Vice President of the California Federation of Interpreters, Local 39000. Her dedication to her profession is evident in her work at the Clara Shortridge-Foltz Criminal Justice Center in Downtown Los Angeles, where she continues to make a meaningful impact on the people she serves that are going through the criminal process. Beyond her professional commitments, Begonya has demonstrated her commitment to the advancement of her field by developing training programs and Continuing Education classes for Medical Interpreters at Shriners Hospital for Children. She has also shared her knowledge and expertise through workshops conducted both online and in-person, nurturing the next generation of aspiring interpreters.
Begonya’s passion for fostering cultural exchange and understanding is reflected in her involvement with the Union where she successfully lobbied to enhance the Interpreter Act through the passing of her unions’ sponsored bill AB 1032 and her role on the board of “Valencia Cultural Point.” Through this organization, she actively works to establish cultural connections between Los Angeles and Valencia, Spain. By supporting cultural activities and hosting events, Begonya contributes to the enrichment of both communities. Additionally, she serves on the board of “MACHA Theatre” (Mujeres Advancing Culture, History & Art), a non-profit organization dedicated to bridging the gap between straight and gay communities of diverse ethnicities. MACHA Theatre provides a platform for artistic expression and promotes inclusivity within the LGBTQ community.
In her personal time, Begonya is a staunch advocate for social justice initiatives. She passionately engages with her community, connecting them with political candidates who share her commitment to anti-racist policies. Through her efforts, Begonya strives to create a more equitable and inclusive society.
